Where it all began

About > Our Story

Craft first. Always.

Every story has a starting point. Ours began in the English countryside with a shed, a single beam, and a belief in doing things properly. Decades later, we’re still crafting floors with the same care, just on a much larger stage.

Made by hand. Driven by vision.

Before Woodworks became the global benchmark in bespoke wood flooring, it was a one-man pursuit in the English countryside. From a young age, our founder, Robert Walsh, was drawn to wood. Not just its form, but its soul. Where others saw raw material, he saw potential.

Made by hand. Driven by vision.

“When you understand the soul of a material, you can create something that lasts longer than a lifetime.”

Robert Walsh — Founder & CEO

Craft beyond trends

We’ve always looked beyond trends. Not because we ignore design, but because we respect it. From pioneering wide planks to creating award-winning collections like Carbonised that uses a traditional wood-burning process, we create floors that respond to architecture and endure over time.

Signs of a story well told

We work with wood that has lived. From antique French oak to Burmese teak, we restore each board by hand, preserving the markings that make it unique. You’ll often find traces of a former life: nail holes, saw marks, age-worn grain. These aren’t flaws. They’re part of the story, and part of what makes a Woodworks floor so distinctive.

A global legacy

From Fitzrovia to Manhattan, and even at sea, today our floors can be found in hotels, homes, cultural institutions and vessels across the globe. Yet everything is still made by hand in our Cheshire workshops, with the same belief that started it all: make it properly, make it purposefully.
